Tejal Joseph Functional Medicine Ann Arbor

After 21 years in Medicine, I have spent the last 7 years training in Functional Medicine so that I can help more patients uncover the root causes of chronic medical illnesses and help them heal, not just cover their symptoms with another pill.

Hi there! I’m Dr. Tejal Joseph.
Thank you so much for visiting Bloom Functional Medicine’s site.

I have been a family doctor for over 21 years. During this time, I have learned how to identify and manage a whole host of both acute and chronic illnesses. As I watched the toll that chronic diseases took on my patients, I grew weary and frustrated with not having adequate explanations for them despite all of my medical training. I was tired of placing a diagnosis on my patients and giving them a corresponding prescription. I was often puzzled when it came to the “whys” for their common maladies. Why were they gaining weight despite following a pretty healthy diet? Why couldn’t they sleep without a sleeping pill? Why did their labs look normal yet they had a long list of symptoms? I longed for more tools, both in my own toolbox and to place in my patients’ toolbox - tools to dig deeper into their symptoms, root causes of illness, and treatments outside of medications or surgery. I felt that my patients deserved answers for their conditions and a plan to actually heal their conditions, not just manage them.

As I searched for additional resources to help my patients, I came across Functional Medicine. I learned that Functional Medicine can help uncover the multiple underlying causes of many chronic health conditions. This discipline of medicine uses a full body, systems based approach to each patient, no matter what their medical condition manifests as. I was fascinated to learn that this was such a successful model that the Cleveland Clinic had opened a Center for Functional Medicine. I felt recharged and energized to learn and apply this evidence based, scientifically backed method of patient care. I have spent the past four years obtaining advanced training in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine, the Kalish Institute of Functional Medicine, and the Institute for Hormonal Health.

I feel that my background in traditional medicine combined with additional training in Functional Medicine helps me to approach patients and their medical conditions and symptoms with an expanded lens. With the current concern of COVID-19 on most people’s minds, and the growing number of Americans with at least one chronic medical condition, it has never been a better time to address root causes of illness. Since Functional Medicine is not a substitute for primary care, I would love to collaborate with every patient’s primary care provider to develop a comprehensive treatment strategy to enhance their medical care.Having witnessed the suffering that patients have experienced with their illnesses, I am motivated to dig deeper to help patients learn more about their conditions and partner with them on their journey to wellness and improved health.

3 Things I’m Proud Of…

#1

I am extremely proud to be the first American born member of a very large Indian family. I am grateful for everything that my Mom and Dad sacrificed to immigrate to America so they could have a better life for their children (who hadn't even been born yet!). I am also proud to be a member of the Joseph family after I married Kevin. My "second" (Irish and Italian American) parents and extended family have given me a tremendous amount of love, kindness, and support over the years.

I am very proud of my family. I am married to Kevin, my college sweetheart. He is a very patient and kind middle school math teacher! I am proud Mom to Maya and Dominic. Here’s a picture of when they were both shorter than me, carrying out Mom’s wish of planting flowers. I am also very proud of Henry, our fun-loving, kitchen floor cleaning cockapoo dog.

I am proud to share Functional Medicine with the Brighton community. It is definitely a leap of faith to branch out and start a new practice, especially during a pandemic. However, I truly feel that Functional Medicine is the medicine of the future, especially as the chronic disease burden continues to grow all around us. It is my goal for Bloom Functional Medicine to help patients who haven't been able find solutions, and also assist those who are early on in their health quest to avoid chronic diseases.

Fun Fact!

I love to garden. Ok, I actually have a bit of an obsession with flowers, and I MAY have too many flower beds and pots to keep up with...but, there are worse things to be addicted to! Actually, the joy of watching things grow, from children to puppies to flowers, is the inspiration behind the naming of Bloom Functional Medicine. It will be my honor to help patients grow and achieve improved health and wellness by guiding their bodies’ healing process.
